About us

The Horticultural Society is one of Bridge’s oldest village societies. We have records of meetings going back to 1911 when it was known initially as Bridge & District Horticultural Society. It subsequently changed its name to the Nailbourne Horticultural Society in 1976 to reflect membership from the surrounding area.

However further evidence has come to light that the Society was in fact founded in 1871 and there is a record of it holding an Annual Flower Show in 1878 from the following quote about the occasion: It was held in the ‘Bifrons Estate’ on Tuesday 31 July and was deemed ‘the best show yet’. The weather was agreeable; it attracted many visitors including 200 school children and 40 inmates from the workhouse – and we celebrated the event by singing ‘In an English Country Garden’.”
